Where does the tongue drum come from?
The ZenaDrum is a tongue drum, a percussion instrument from the idiophone family. The sound of idiophones like the ZenaDrum is produced solely by the material of the instrument, without the need for a string or an external resonator.
The reed drum has many names: Steel Reed Drum, Tongue Drum, Tank Drum or even Hank Drum.
Its special and unique shape is often compared to a flying saucer. The number of ‘tongues’ defines the number of notes the instrument has. The sweet sound of the reed drum is produced when struck with sticks or pads.
This percussion instrument is appreciated for its extremely soothing and melodic sound, but above all for its ease of playing.
Due to its intuitiveness, the ZenaDrum does not require any special musical knowledge and is therefore very popular with beginners and children.
In just a few minutes it is possible to play beautiful and relaxing melodies.
The hang drum, forerunner of the tongue drum
The precursor of the tongue drum is the hang drum, also called the handpan. Although its name is very similar to that of the tongue drum and it makes beautiful music, this instrument differs in some respects.
The hang drum is played with the hands only and is much larger than our tongue drum, making it impractical to carry.
Moreover, it does not have a reed, but a hammered surface that allows it to produce sounds with the hand drum.
Finally, it has two major disadvantages: its price and its maintenance. Non-steel handpans can easily rust and go out of tune. As for the price, it is much less attractive, as you can expect to pay more than 1000€ for a good quality handpan, i.e. 10 times more expensive than a Tongue Drum.
